Monolith is Kraftek’s annual state of the nation techno compilation and Volume 2 focuses on tough, trippy techno. Oscar Escapa’s “Molecule” is a heavy, traced out affair, led by pounding kicks and psychedelic electronic surges, while on SAMA’s “The Beholder” a throbbing groove underpins epic melodic flourishes that have echoes of 90s German trance. A similar, albeit somewhat darker aesthetic is audible on the buzz-saw bass and growling riffs of Joyhauser’s “Galaxy Phase”. However, this compilation isn’t solely inspired by retro sources: The YellowHeads “8 Bits” is a powerful slice of rugged, bass-heavy techno and Martin Lacroix and Oscar Escapa’s “Poison” bears the raw, hollowed out drums of bass artists like Martyn.

The twentieth release on Nina Kraviz’ label is ‘a homage to some of the most uncompromising manifestations of electronic music imaginable’. Listening to the ear-splitting drill’n’bass of Biogen’s “Hexagraphic” it’s hard to argue with the label’s mission statement. Indeed, PTU’s bleep-heavy “Castor And Pollux” sounds positively mellow when played beside the frenetic beats of Nikita Zabelin edit’s of Deka’s “Pearl” and Frankfurt legend Marc ‘The Mover’ Acardipane’s hardcore contribution, “Pitch-Hiker” as Pilldriver. While the compilation consolidates Trip’s reputation as a single-minded outlet, it is also an essential release for Aphex Twin completists as it contains a rare track from his Universal Indicator project.
