ZKY und DANIEL PAUL, aka CAB DRIVERS, are best known for their driving floor-fillers. Since more then two decades their productions take place in every well sorted record case. That they are also high in demand as remixers, this compilation of selected remixes will show. The Berlin Duo again demonstrate its qualities: impulsive on NAIL’s “DUB ME”, expressive for Mamboturs “Desde Que Te Vi” and powerfull on Diego Krause’s “Liberation”. For fans of the typical sound of CAB DRIVERS this 7-tracker it’s a must have, for all discoverers a good way in.
Review:
In which seven tracks by German deep/tech house veterans Paul Daniel and Jens Augustowsky (better known as Cab Drivers) get reworked by a selection of producers both well-known and slightly less so. Nail’s chuggy, small-hours take on ‘Me Dub’ and Diego Krause’s chunky, bass-y remix of ‘Liberation’, which has something of an early/mid 90s feel, will doubtless get the most attention here, but other highlights include the deep New Jersey vibes of A Scott & Chad’s mix of ‘Mrs J’, the drifty, acid-flecked late night ride that is ThorsteinssAnn’s remix of ‘Midnight At Taffey’s’ and Mancini’s wonky, squelchy remix of ‘Jijilaja’.

Berlin’s finest and Cabinet Records head honchos Jens Augustowsky and Daniel Paul return for more perfect loops with their signature all hardware setup. The most infectious and hypnotic minimal house served up to perfection on their newest offering. It starts off with the plonky swing fuelled groove of “Alternative Acts”: a signature sound of theirs which you can hear in the work of other artists they no doubt influenced such as Mike Shannon. Then, there’s the deep and emotive “Drive One” supported by thunderous toms and bittersweet pad textures complete with perfectly filtered chords. Finally “Holiday Ahead” is the most positive and uplifting offering here and perfect to play just as the sunlight starts to peer through the blinds on Sunday morning: there’s hell of a lot of soul on this boompty acid jam.

The long-running Cabinet label serves up some more sublime tech-house. Audio Werner started releasing records during the minimal boom, but in more recent years he has forged out a deeper sound. On the title track, he lays down dense drums and a pulsing rhythm before the musical elements take over. A combination of spacey chords and balmy keys sees “Dwelling” soar into the cosmos. By contrast, Daniel Paul’s “Gemuet” is all about remaining on the ground. This the Cabinet mainstay achieves through the use of a walking bassline that sounds like it might protrude through the speakers at any moment, such is the power of the track’s subs.
